Louisville, Ky – UTEP sophomore Winny Koech notched an impressive 10th-place finish at the NCAA Divsion I Pre-National Invitational Saturday morning at the E.P. “Tom Sawyer” State Park, hosted by Louisville.
“Winny had a very impressive performance today,” head coach Paul Ereng said. ” She didn’t have a very good start to the season but with this performance she showed she is among the elite in the country.”
Koech completed the women’s 6K race with a time of 20:03.3 in a competitive field of 288 runners. Teammate Lilian Koech followed by finishing in 26th overall, clocking a time of 20:23.1.
Sophomore Linda Cheruiyot clocked a season-best 21:12.2 to finish 100th overall. Closing out the race for the Miners were the three freshmen, Andrea Lucero (24:52.8), Carolyne Chepkosgei (24:57.6) and Destiny White (28:08.1).
The women’s team finished 28th overall in a field of 43 teams, recording a total score of 693.
On the men’s side, Antony Kosgei led the Miners by notching a 22nd-place finish with a time of 24:49.1. Freshman Cornelius Kapel garnered a 32nd-place finish (24:59.4) in his Pre-National Invitational debut.
Closing out the men’s 8K race were Carvellion Horn (39:13.0) and Asa Guevara (40:52.0).
The Orange and Blue will return to action on Oct. 28 for the Conference USA Championship in Hattiesburg, Miss.
