UTEP junior Valeria Mendizabal has been named the Conference USA Co-Golfer of the Week after her performance for the Miners women’s golf program in the season-opener this week.
Mendizabal claimed the individual title at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial this week in Springfield, Missouri. The junior from Guatemala shot 3-under-par 68 in the final round on Tuesday to take home first place among the field of 75 players with a total score of 212 (69-75-68) for the event.
Her 68 score in the third round and overall total of 212 are both career-lows for the junior, while the first-place finish is the first of Mendizabal’s career as a Miner. She finished the tournament at 1-under-par.
As a team, the Miners just missed out on first place, coming in second place out of 12 teams competing at the Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.
The Miners return to action Sept. 28-29 when the team travels to compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California.
