Notre Dame, Ind.- The UTEP men’s golf team will continue its 2016-17 campaign when it travels to Notre Dame, Ind. for the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic Oct. 9-11 at the Warren Golf Course. The par-71, 7,023-yard course will be played as a par-70, 6,810-yard course and the 18th hole has been shortened to a par-3 due to the remnants of a late-summer flood.
“Everybody gets to play the same course, that won’t make any bit of a difference to us,” head coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “However they set it up, however difficult or scoreable they set it up, we’ve all got to play it. I’m sure it’s going to be a good test. We’ve had a decent start to the year and some other teams in this field have also started off very well, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us to see if we can continue playing well.”
The three 18-hole rounds will commence Sunday morning and conclude Tuesday morning.
“I know our guys really enjoy only playing 18 holes a day as opposed to 36,” Lieberwirth said. “It just gets really long and tiring, so I know these guys are definitely excited about this event.”
UTEP, which finished tied for first and eighth in the previous two tournaments, will face off against Ball State, Butler, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Illinois State, IUPUI, Nevada, Notre Dame, San Diego, Santa Clara, Seattle, Utah State, William & Mary and Xavier.
Competing for the Miners will be Frederik Dreier, Andreas Sorensen, Nicklas Pihl, Charles Corner, Ben Getman and freshman Cole Donielson, who will be playing as an individual. This will be Donielson’s first tournament for UTEP.
“It’s somewhere new, we haven’t been to this [tourney] before,” Lieberwirth said. “I think it’ll be pretty good for our guys being in the Midwest. We’ve got a cooler season, the type of grass and stuff is going to be more familiar to our European kids and our Canadian, so it’s going to be a little closer to home for them.”
All 54 holes will be scored live via golfstat.com.
