UTEP’s Michael Saruni was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mountain Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year on Monday morning.
Saruni has established himself as one of the top runners in the country. The freshman is currently ranked third in the nation in the 800m with a time of 1:46.90. His time is also the second fastest-time in school history.
The freshman was named a Conference USA Athlete of the Week during the 2017 indoor season. At the C-USA indoor championships held in Birmingham Ala. the mid distance runner captured two gold medals in the 800m and the mile run (4:03.32). Saruni scored a total of 20 team points at the conference meet.
Along with four other Miners, Saruni will compete at the 2017 NCAA Championships held March 10-11 at College Station, Texas. In his best event, Saruni will look to qualify for the 800m final on Friday at 7:20 p.m. CT and will run the distance medley relay on Friday set for 8:55 p.m.
