UTEP’s Zec Receives Air Force Reserve C-USA Spirit Of Service Award

DALLAS – UTEP women’s basketball junior guard Katarina Zec was one of 14 student-athletes across the league to receive the Air Force Reserve Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

The award is given to student-athletes who donate their time in the community, have a high academic standing and excel in their respective sports. It is presented three times throughout the year to one student-athlete at each conference institution. Wednesday’s honorees represent winter sports: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and women’s swimming & diving.

Zec boasts a 3.80 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in biochemistry. The native of Belgrade, Serbia, is a two-time (2017 and 2018) recipient of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. She has also been a member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll twice (2017 and 2018).

She has been active in the community at numerous events. She has volunteered at the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation Run Together 5K Run/Walk, setting up the obstacle course for the event. She also helped at the Make-A-Wish walk for wishes, cheering on the children and families that participated in the walk. At the beginning of the year, Zec volunteered at the Alumni Picnic and played with kids in the community. She also helped hand out water to participants at the UTEP Wellness Run.

Zec started 30 of 31 games in 2018-19, ranking second on the squad in scoring (10.1 ppg), minutes per game (30.0), field goals made (108) and attempted (252) and 3-pointers made (34) and attempted (95). She paced the team in 3-point percentage (35.8, 10th C-USA) and free-throw percentage (81.8, sixth C-USA). She reached double figures in scoring in 17 contests, including the final 12 games of the year. She also pulled down 4.4 rebounds per game to tie for fourth on the team.
