In keeping with restrictions issued by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Monday the Ysleta Independent School District has announced it will celebrate its Class of 2020 graduates with special, hybrid virtual commencement ceremonies that will air in mid-June, with the possibility of hosting outdoor high-school stadium graduations at a later date.
In a video message posted Monday, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Xavier De La Torre revealed details of the hybrid virtual ceremonies, which will include personalized video of every graduate being announced to walk across the stage in a cap and gown, and moving his/her tassel from left to right.
We planned both virtual and in-person graduations to honor the Class of 2020 because of the challenges and struggles they’ve been forced to overcome in the last few weeks of their senior year,” Superintendent Dr. Xavier De La Torre said. “This way, our seniors can come home one last time to their high schools, where we can all congratulate them before bidding them farewell.”
The hybrid ceremonies will also include with pre-recorded speeches by district officials, valedictorians and salutatorians, student performances, and other traditional commencement activities – all while maintaining social distancing and other precautions recommended by health officials to help combat the spread of COVID-19.
The graduations will air on June 13 and 14 on KTSM Channel 9, and also online, KTSM Facebook Live, and the district’s YouTube channel.
Times for each ceremony have yet to be determined, but will be announced in the coming weeks and posted at online and YISD media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
Class rankings for each high school should be determined by May 21. Top 10-ranked students will then be able to switch out their caps and gowns from May 22-26 through Herff Jones for caps and gowns in the colors designated for each school’s Top 10.
Graduating seniors at each school will be filmed in advance according to the following schedule:
Wed. May 27: Eastwood HS
Thurs. May 28: Valle Verde ECHS
Fri. May 29: Ysleta HS
Mon. June 1: Hanks HS
Tues. June 2: Riverside HS
Wed. June 3: Del Valle HS
Thurs. June 4: Bel Air HS
Fri. June 5: Parkland HS
High schools will reach out to parents and students this week to provide times/locations of filming, as well as health guidelines and appropriate graduation dress code.
All graduates will have their temperatures checked and must wear face masks, which they can remove before being filmed on the graduation stage. Schools will provide masks for students who don’t have them. Faculty and staff will supervise graduates to ensure they are wearing masks and maintaining social distancing
Tentative outdoor ceremonies at high-school stadiums are also being planned from July 23-31, with each ceremony taking place at 8 p.m., and will follow all city, state, and federal safety measures.
