Video+story: SISD Board honors students, staff for talent, heroism

Traditionally, each month at the SISD Board of Trustees, the board members and superintendent honor outstanding Team SISD students and staff who have earned local, regional, state, or national accolades and recognition.

“Due to the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure the health and well-being of students and staff, it has not been possible to bring in these exceptional individuals and teams,” District officials said. “However, they are still deserving of a moment in the spotlight for their outstanding achievements.”

To that end, SISD has created a celebratory video, highlighting the students and their actions.

Pebble Hills High School student-athlete  Kenneth Cooper Jr. was recognized as  a hero after he rescued a 6-year old girl while at a Galveston beach with his family this summer.

“He became concerned when he noticed the child was drifting off into the ocean past the warning signs along the beach,” SISD shared. “He selflessly swam in towards her, caught her as she was slipping off the boogie board that was keeping her afloat and pulled her to safety. The girl’s family was extremely grateful for his heroic actions. He said he was always taught to help others so he “just did what was right.” Congratulations to Kenneth Cooper Jr.!”

The Socorro Independent School District Fine Arts Department, in partnership with the Green Hope Project, launched the inaugural Art 6ft Apart Contest in the spring. Fifteen winners were celebrated in a virtual awards ceremony on May 30.

The contest and online gallery displaying the Top 100 entries was created to serve as an outlet for the SISD community to express themselves during the time of quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Winners were chosen in five categories: elementary school, middle school, high school, employee and parent.
