I don’t know if you have noticed – and I am going to put this out there as an aside to the race announcement below – but Catholic Schools in El Paso are closing. Between low enrollment numbers, and the distance parents must travel to take their kids to school, it is all having an impact on the community.
We need to have a choice in where we send our children for education. The public-school system is great, and I am not trying to disparage them for what they do, but some parents want more. Some parents want their children to receive a quality education that includes a faith component.
If you are Jewish, you may want a Hebrew Day School. Anglican? That’s covered as well. Christian schools are also out there. However, the Catholic Schools seem to be hardest hit.
So, if you don’t have any plans for March 24th , why not register for the race or a walk? Early registration ends on the 23rd , with the race packet pickup happening that evening at Fr. Yermo.
Fr. Yermo Schools, one of El Paso’s longest-serving Catholic Schools, will be hosting a Spartan Run. This will be a 5K run/walk and a one-mile fun run/walk at Ascarate Park on March 24th at 8 am.
The day of the race there will be food, jumping balloons for the children, and other activities. Of course, runners will be able to participate in any of the races-slash-walks that are planned. The registration fees are $25 for individuals, $30 the day of the race. To register as a team – at the rate of $15 per team member – you must have five people to qualify as a team.
You can register at Fr. Yermo, 2200 Washington Street, or via a phone call at 915-532- 6875. You may also register online.
The monies from this race will be used for the Fr. Yermo Capital Fund so that the Sisters can maintain the school properties.
If you can’t make the race, and still want to support Fr. Yermo School and its mission, get in touch with them at the methods mentioned above, I’m sure that would be happy to hear from you and overjoyed by your support.
