Violinists To Perform With UTEP’s Middle Eastern Music Ensemble This Week

Violinist Layale Chaker and violist Hannah Nicholas will perform at the UTEP campus and the El Paso Holocaust Museum for workshops, masterclasses, a community talk/performance and a concert with UTEP’s Middle Eastern music ensemble, Layali Al-Sham.

Chaker and Nicholas are world-class performers whose collaboration is remarkable, considering their diverse backgrounds: Chaker identifies as Lebanese, and Nicholas as Jewish-American.

Hailing from nations that normally thwart any kind of musical exchange such as this, Chaker and Nicholas have overcome the obstacles that would typically arise from their cultural and religious differences.

Both artists have enjoyed international careers under the batons of Michael Tilson Thomas (San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony and London Symphony Orchestra) and Daniel Barenboim (Berlin State Opera, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and La Scala Milan).

February 1st, 2018 – ‘Music as Resistance’ @ the El Paso Holocaust Museum, 6:00pm

February 3rd, 2018 – ‘Perspectives in Counterpoint’ Layale Chaker and Hannah Nicholas perform Arabic and Jewish music with UTEP’s Layali Al-Sham ensemble @ UTEP Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall, 7:30pm
