HOUSTON, Texas – The UTEP volleyball team put up a great effort against Western Kentucky in the quarterfinal round of the C-USA Championships but fell to the Lady Toppers in three sets (19-25, 23-25, 24-26).
Senior Tatum Winter put up an impressive performance with eight kills at a .375 hitting percentage, two blocks, two digs and a service ace while Macey Austin paced UTEP with nine total kills. Lindsey Larson registered a double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs while adding six kills and two blocks.
The first set was a tight battle as both sides struggled to build any type of a substantial lead. Rachel Anderson led the WKU offense with six kills in the frame. The Lady Toppers pulled away in the second half of the set, earning a 25-19 win.
In set two, the Miners raced out to a 7-1 lead fueled by three kills from Tatum Winter. WKU would rally however, notching eight of the next 11 points en route to a 10-9 lead. The Lady Toppers stretched their lead all the way to 20-15 but the Miners put together an impressive stretch, taking eight of the next 11 points drawing the set to a 23-23 tie. WKU would hold on and pull out the final two points off a pair of kills from Anderson, giving the Lady Toppers a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Set three took on the same tone as the first set as both sides were deadlocked at 14 at the first timeout. The match remained tight as both sides refused to give ground either way. WKU took a slight 25-24 lead and then claimed the set and the match after a UTEP ball handling error.
UTEP has one more match on the schedule for the 2016 season. The Miners will take on NM State on Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. (MT) in Memorial Gym.
