WBAMC–TTUHSC El Paso Orthopaedic Resident honored for Research

A research study led by Capt. Spencer Schulte, M.D., a resident in the William Beaumont Army Medical Center – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program, has been honored by the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) and the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS).

“Impact of Fascia Iliaca Block on Pain Outcomes and Opioid Consumption for Hip Fracture Patients: A Prospective, Randomized Study,” was selected by the OTA for the 2019 Memorial Award, given to the best resident/fellow study of the 2019 OTA Annual Meeting. The award includes $500 and travel expense reimbursement of up to $2,000 for 2020 OTA annual meetings.

Dr. Schulte also won the SOMOS Norman T. Kirk Paper Award for the study. The award, presented at the 2019 SOMOS Annual Meeting, recognized the best scientific paper by a military orthopaedic resident. The award includes $1,000 and a plaque.

The study provides further evidence that a fascia iliaca block (a type of local anesthetic nerve block) can provide pain relief to hip fracture patients and help decrease the need for opioid pain medications.

The study’s co-authors include Mai P. Nguyen, M.D.; Michael Reich, M.D.; Adam Adler, M.D.; Richard Van Tienderen, D.O.; and Isaac Fernandez, M.D.
