UTEP women’s tennis coach Roberto Aspillaga announced the 2017 spring schedule on Wednesday, with the Miners set to take on at least four teams who finished the 2015-16 season in the Top 75.
TCU will compete in four matches at the El Paso Tennis Club in the spring of 2017, while also facing TCU, who participated in the NCAA Championships in May.
“I am excited for the girls,” Aspillaga said. “They had a great fall season and now it is time to play as a team again. We get to play a very competitive schedule with over 12 opponents in the Top 125, as well as traveling to new destinations for us to see. It will be a challenging and fun experience and I can’t wait for the team to start competing again.”
UTEP starts spring action with a tournament held Jan. 13-15 in Fort Worth, Texas as the squad participates in the three-day TCU Invitational at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The team will then travel to Abilene, Texas to face-off with the Horned Frogs, who finished the 2016 season with a No. 31 national ranking, and the host, Abilene Christian, in a double header on Jan. 21 at the Eager Tennis Pavilion. The Orange and Blue will then head to Norman, Okla. t
UTEP will then round out the month by heading back to Texas for its next match-up against UT-Arlington, who finished off the previous season at No. 75 in the ITA National Rankings. The match will be hosted by the Mavericks at the UTA Tennis Center on Jan. 30.
The Miners will continue on the road the following weekend as No. 74 Arizona hosts three matches for UTEP at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson. Ariz. The team is scheduled to compete against Tulane on Feb. 3 and will follow with a contest against the Wild Cats the next day. The Orange and Blue will close out its weekend in Tucson with action against Sacramento State on Feb. 5.
The UTEP squad will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 10 in Corpus Christi, Texas before opening its home slate at the El Paso Tennis Club. The first home match on the schedule for the Miners will take place on Feb. 12 when they host Houston.
The Orange and Blue will take on Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 17 while Wyoming will also be on hand to host the Miners the following day. Both matches are scheduled at the UW Tennis Complex in Laramie, Wyo. The team will then travel to Boulder, Colo. for a match against Colorado to close out the month on Feb. 19.
The team opens the month of March on the road for a showdown with Northern Arizona on Mar. 3 before facing Utah State the next day at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex in Flagstaff, Ariz. UTEP will be in California after a week off as they are set to take on Cal State Fullerton (Mar. 12) at the Titan Tennis Courts in Fullerton, Calif. and Loyola Marymount at the LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif. on Mar. 13.
UTEP will return to the El Paso Tennis Club on Mar. 18 as it hosts Iowa State before heading back out of town to face No. 64 New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. on Mar. 24.
Conference action will take place at home with UTSA on Apr. 9 before welcoming I-10 rival NM State on Apr. 15 to wrap up the regular season.
The Miners will start postseason play by heading to Denton, Texas for the 2017 Conference USA Championships on April 20-23 at the North Texas campus.
