7 YISD schools among top EP schools on K-8 rankings lists

Seven schools in the Ysleta Independent School District are among the El Paso area’s top 10-ranked public elementary schools and middle schools, according to the 2022 Best K-8 Schools Rankings released for the first time ever this month by U.S. News & World Report.

Capturing the top spot among local middle schools was the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, which ranked first in El Paso and 15 th in the state of Texas. YWLA, the city’s first single-gender, college-preparatory public school for girls in grades 6-12, will see its first class of college-bound students graduate next spring. YWLA was followed by the K-8 Alicia R. Chacon International School in the No. 2 spot, with Eastwood Middle School (No. 6) and the K-8 Eastwood Knolls International School (No. 8) rounding out El Paso’s top 10 list.

Among the top 10 local elementary schools, Ramona Elementary School was ranked No. 4, followed by North Star Elementary School (No. 6), the K-8 Alicia Chacon International School (No. 7), and Vista Hills Elementary School (No. 9). These new rankings come just a few weeks after Ysleta ISD was named the No. 1 school district in the El Paso area on the 2022 Best School Districts by Niche, a leading platform connecting students and families with colleges and schools.

This is the first year for U.S. News & World Report’s new elementary/middle school rankings, which are similar in nature to its annual Best High Schools rankings. According to the publication, these new rankings assess student performance in the context of their states and demographics – and because they focus on academics, the rankings can provide insight into a key element of school quality to help parents determine the best school for their children.

Scoring was almost entirely rooted in students’ performance on state tests in math and reading/language arts, the publication said. More than 79,000 unique public grade schools were ranked in 2021, including 47,325 schools newly ranked as elementary schools and 23,255 as middle schools – some of which are in both rankings.
