YMCA of El Paso requesting donations for Afghan Refugees

Officials with the YMCA of El Paso announced Friday that the organization has been asked to help secure donations for the Afghanistan Refugees arriving in our area.

“Imagine that your life has been threatened, you go to a different country with the clothes on your back. You have children but have nothing to play with,” YMCA President Bill Coon shared. “Families, kids, people pulled away from their homes need something to do while they go through the process of a new life. They need your help.”

According to the YMCA, they were provided a list of items requested by the refugees for donation, ranging from DVDs to sports equipment.  The refugees began arriving in El Paso last week, and are being housed on post.

For those who cannot purchase the needed supplies, but want to send in a donation, they simply mark their donation ‘for the refugee’ and 100% of the donation will directly to the refugees. Checks can be made out to the YMCA of El Paso and donors will receive a donation receipt.

Officials add that any YMCA in El Paso will take the refugee donation or it can be dropped off at 810 Wyoming.

“El Paso is the crossroads to a new life and we welcome all those who come in,” Coon adds. “Proverbs 19:17 states “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord and he will reward them for what they have done.”
