Ysleta Middle School is set to receive $1,500 to support students impacted by grief and the COVID-19 pandemic after winning the first-ever Better with Books award.
Sponsored by New York Life Insurance Co. and First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise designed to help remove barriers to education, more than 170 schools and organizations in five U.S. markets applied for the Better with Books awards, and Ysleta Middle School was one of 15 winners to receive the funding.
A $1,500 check was presented Nov. 19, 2021 to Ysleta Middle School Principal Jose Perez and administrators from Pablo A. Magdaleno Carlos, a senior associate for New York Life’s office in El Paso.
YISD officials share that the funding will be used to purchase books and resources from First Book’s Marketplace to support students impacted by grief and COVID-19.
The new Better with Books program was established in response to a survey conducted by New York Life and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) that showed 95% of educators agreed they would like to do more to help grieving students.
